Interim Storage for Spent Nuclear Fuel at Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant
Contract
As the Soviet Union put an end to the repatriation of spent fuel in 1989, it became necessary for the Czech Republic to construct an interim storage facility. For the Dukovany NPP with four VVER-440 units it was imperative to have additional storage capacities for spent nuclear fuel available by the year 1995. A NUKEM-led consortium with GNB came up with a solution for cask-based dry storage similar to the facilities existing in Germany. The casks filled with spent fuel are placed into a safe and secure building equipped with alarm and temperature monitoring systems. Fuel assemblies of VVER-440/84 reactors are delivered for storage in a new cask designed in accordance with the safety principles of CASTOR cask family.
Description
NUKEM was responsible for project management, planning and turn-key construction of the interim storage facility. This included: Design and licensing Construction of the interim storage facility, including radiation monitoring system, security fence, etc. Equipment for cask loading inside the reactor building GNB was responsible for all aspects associated with casks and mechanical handling equipment.
Services
NUKEM provided the following services: Delivery of the interim storage facility, including interfaces to the NPP infrastructure, e.g.: Radiation protection and monitoring Access roads and rails Delivery of 60 CASTOR 440/84 transport and storage casks
